Donating stock to PAWS Atlanta?
The setup Two people invest $1000 in XYZ Stock, they hold it for one year and it’s now worth $2000. They both want to donate the stock to PAWS Atlanta, however, how they do it can impact the amount donated and their tax implications. Person A is going to sell the stock and then donate the proceeds, while Person B is going to donate the stock directly to PAWS Atlanta. Both of these people are in the 28% tax bracket.
Person A They have to sell the stock and will then have a realized gain of $1,000. However, taxes have to be paid on that $1,000, they’re in the 28% tax bracket so that means that they’ll have to pay $280 to the government. The end donation to PAWS Atlanta is $1,720 and that is the amount that Person A can take off their taxes at the end of the year, presuming that they itemize their charitable deductions.
Person B They will call PAWS Atlanta directly and tell us that they’d like to donate all of their shares of XYZ Stock, worth $2,000. Person B receives a taxable deduction of $2,000 (a 14% increase over Person A) and PAWS Atlanta receives a larger donation as well.
That wasn’t so difficult now was it? If your stock lost money, you’re better off selling the stock, rather than donating it outright. However, for any and all questions about selling stock as a means of donating to PAWS Atlanta please speak with your investment professional.
There are dozens of ways to donate to PAWS Atlanta and all donations are appreciated. If you have any specific questions about donating to PAWS Atlanta please call 770-593-1155, x 16.

Taking a Stand Against Cruelty
Taking a Stand against Animal Cruelty
Laura L. Mckelvey
A 3-4 month old Australian shepherd mix named Mailin was lucky when a PAWS employee walked away from the shelter, towards Covington Highway to collect trash thrown out by motorists. He found Mailin crumpled on a small white blanket with nothing to eat, drink, or contain him. He presumed that Mailin was dead and flagged down a vet tech to help recover the body. Indeed, Mailin was alive. He didn't need a leash or a crate to keep him from wandering because he had been starved to the extent that he could not stand or bark. Mailin could have easily gone unnoticed on that hot July day, but instead he was brought straight to the clinic for IV fluids and testing. The PAWS Atlanta vet techs and staff gave him around the clock attention for days. Finally, he could meander around the room, hold up his head, and even let out a few barks. Mailin is growing in strength and with everyone’s attention and efforts he will be available for adoption in a couple weeks.
Animals come from all over the place to be sheltered and cared for by the PAWS Atlanta staff. Some of them are transferred from local animal control facilities that are always full and under constant pressure to take in more animals. Others are found as strays or surrendered by owners who have lost everything and can no longer care for their pet. It is always heartbreaking to hear the lonely howls of the homeless dogs in their cages, but the pets that suffer from acts of animal cruelty are always the most difficult to wrap your mind around. These two dogs have shown courage and forgiveness when it seemed impossible to have either. They have a lot to teach us about moving forward and enjoying life.
It is because of our volunteers and donors that PAWS Atlanta is able to reach out to these pets. The shelter is sustained by your generosity, but the number of animals that need our help seems to be growing. Please consider making a donation to PAWS Atlanta today, or come out to the shelter to meet Mailin and some of our other critters looking for a family that will love them forever. By doing either of these things you are taking an active role in saving lives in your community.

Can anybody assist this dog?
Over the weekend a cute little stray dog found her way into our neighborhood. It was apparent she had been mistreated, she had been spray-painted blue [by some mean idiot].Unfortunately I can not keep her (I have dogs) and need to find a good home for her. Maybe one of you would like a dog, or know someone else who can help her by giving her a good home. She is a playful, affectionate girl with a sweet disposition. And as you can see by the photo, very pretty, and temporarily blue. Please pass her photo along, we must find her a happy home quickly.
Age between 1 and 2? Has puppy-type energy
Weight maybe 25 -30 lbs, she is thin, but not emaciated
Sex F
Fixed? Do not think so.
Gets along well with dogs? Yes, she wants to play, and was appropriately submissive to our "bossier" dog. Was not shy when my 2 dogs were giving her the standard “smell-test”, her fur did not go up on her back.
Likes cats? Do not know
Likes children? She seemed to really take to the 12 year old boy next door.
Housetrained? Yes.
Vetted? She has only been at our house since Sunday morning. However, she seems very healthy, have not even found a flea on her. Besides the paint, or die, or whatever they sprayed her with, she does not seem to have any injuries from that.
Type of breed? Her tongue is blue, so maybe part chow or shiba inu?? She is not a pure breed.
She was timid of my husband the first time he tried to help her -- responded to me right away. But she warmed up to him after he fed her and helped give her the oatmeal shampoo bath. Did not fight getting the bath. She seems to be used to being in a house. She was not protective or territorial over her dinner bowls or the chew treats we have given her. I was able to pet her while she chewed it.Likes to walk on the leash along the other dogs.

What is PAWS Atlanta?
PAWS Atlanta is a humane society located in Decatur, Georgia, just 10 minutes east of Atlanta.
As a no kill shelter the cats and dogs in PAWS Atlanta's care stay there until they get adopted. Every pet adopted from PAWS Atlanta is spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, de wormed and microchipped.
The cats at PAWS Atlanta live in a cage free environment.
The dogs at PAWS Atlanta have inside and outside dog runs and a one acre wooded dog trail an off leash area.
In our 43rd year of operation PAWS Atlanta started operations as The Dekalb Humane Society. The name was changed in 2006 because of the incorrect perception that Dekalb County funded the organization.
In fact PAWS Atlanta has always operated on donations from the public, grants and fundraisers.
Most of the animals at PAWS Atlanta are picked up from local animal control offices. Unfortunately the supply is always greater than the demand and our cage space is rarely empty. Having said that PAWS Atlanta does adopt more than 1,000 animals a year. The sad fact of pet overpopulation dictates that regardless of how effective we are at finding them homes, there will always be more.
PAWS Atlanta does offer a vaccination clinic at least twice a month that is open to the public. This allows folks to get their pets vaccinated for $45 or to get a heartworm test or a la carte shots.
PAWS Atlanta can use help in a number of different ways.
Pass the word about one of our great cats or dogs to your circles of influence.
Attend one of our fundraisers. The next one is October 10, The Posh PAWty for PAWS Atlanta, hosted by Victoria Stilwell.
You can purchase tickets to The Posh PAWty here.
Volunteer. We need folks to get walk dogs, socialize dogs, clean cat litter trays, tape animals (then upload them to YouTube) and more.
Adopt. Get a shelter pet, that's an easy way to help...
Regardless of how you can help, or what you can do-THANKS!

Summer newsletter correction
The PAWS Atlanta Summer Newsletter is out!
You can read all about the fundraiser with Victoria Stilwell, host of Animal Planet's, It's me or the Dog, as well as, many other things!
Correction: In the article about 'greening' your cat we incorrectly stated that it was OK for flushable cat litter to go down septic systems. That is a typographical error and should have stated that septic system owners should not flush flushable cat litter. PAWS Atlanta regrets that error.

Aida has been rescued, here is what we found
Aida is a georgous dog. Part German & Golden, very friendly, good with other dogs and all people.
After giving her a once over we discovered that she recently had an imbedded collar. The collar was removed prior to her being turned into PAWS Atlanta, but some scabbing had started to occur. She's doing well, just as happy as the day is long. Everybody is not meant to have a pet and it's better off that she was turned in to us.
She'll be available for adoption in late May.
Wednesday, May 13, 2009
The vaccination clinic is this Sunday, 1-3
Come early, sometimes the clinic can get very busy. All your dog

Engine kittens make it safely to PAWS Atlanta
She drove to the church under the impression that she was the only one going with her.
When she got out of the car at church she found out otherwise.
She had two little stowaways that had curled up next to the engine for shelter. What a surprise to find these two, dirty little kittens screaming from underneath the hood of her car!
The girls were filthy, caked with oil and debris that had been kicked up from the movement of the car.
Filthy, but alive.
The girls were given a very long and special soapy bath. They were a little tired at first, but are now bouncing back to the happy, active three month old kittens they are.
They'll be spayed in the second week of May and then available for adoption around the third week.

Sinatra's Xrays have come back
This is an xray of Sinatra's leg. The leg is the more solid bit in the middle, while the outline of the cast is the outer most white lines.
The finger in the picture is pointing to the area where the break is healing itself.
About an inch and a half up from that you'll see a very faint line going parallel in the bone. We hope that is not a hairline fracture, but we'll have to watch little Sinatra to see how he gets around once the cast is removed.

Tenchi started off the morning with a walk around the PAWS Atlanta trail and then had some offleash time with her buddy, Marlon. Her favorite thing in the world is to be around people. Please come out and meet her today. She is anxious to get out of the shelter and into a home. If you have any questions please call us at (770)593-1155.
